Tools to invest in
By MrFixie
You’ll need tools for a safe and smooth fixed-gear ride:
Tools fall into two categories: carry with tools and home tools. When possible, Park brand tools are most desirable for their quality and longevity.
We suggest you carry these tools with you on every ride:
- Tire levers – You need two but they’re usually sold as a set of three. These, Zefal Tire Levers
, are very durable and made from super-tough polymer construction.
- A portable pump – Choose something small that has presta capabilities. The Nashbar Convertible Mini Pump
is a good pick.
- Gauge – if you don’t have a gauge on your pump, you’ll need one to get your tires inflated to their recommended pressure
- Allen wrenches – to adjust handlebars on the stem, seat post clamp, tighten loose components
- 15mm wrench – for your wheel’s nuts
- Park MTB-3 Multi Tool
- Contains 22 tools including a chain tool, tire lever, phillips head screwdriver, and more.
- Tube patch kit – you don’t have to throw out that old tube, fix it later when you get home and recycle. These Pre-glued Patch Kit
peel and stick patches are pre-glued and easy to use to instantly repair your inner tube in a fix.
Bike maintance is important to keep your bike tuned and your rides safe:
- Home kits – The quickest way to amass a bike tool collection is by purchasing a Tool Kit
.
- Bike stand – It can be pretty frustrating to perform repairs without it. This stand, by Park,
is a is a bit pricy, but will last forever and save you backache.
- Crank arm remover – If you intend to change your cranks, you’ll need to buy an extractor. The Park CCP-4 Crank Puller
is specificcaly designed to remove crank arms from Pipe Billet bottom brackets and does not work on square tapered Bottom Brackets. The Park Tool Crank Puller
is a compact crank puller and can be used to remove splined Octalink and ISIS Drive crank arms, as well as square-holed crank arms.
Tools to specialize your bike:
- Park HG/DISC Lockring Tool – Updated version of the classic FR-5 hyperglide tool, now deeper for removing shimano disk brake lockrings.
